Join your New Life friends for Sunday Daily Office of Morning Prayer and a Centering Prayer experience on July 9. First, love God with Morning Prayer. Then transition to a presentation by guest Sally Goodall, a Life Professed Oblate in the Carmelite Contemplative Religious Order. Sally is an experienced facilitator in developing various spiritual disciplines. These include Centering Prayer, Lectio Divina, and Contemplative prayer. She is looking forward to being at New Life on July 9. She will introduce us to contemplative prayer, then help us reduce the distractions of our crazy world and “rest in God” with a Centering Prayer experience. Afterward, we can enjoy a summer potluck lunch for fun and friendship! Love, Pray, Eat!
Morning Prayer–led by Fr. Phil–begins at the usual service time of 10am. Morning Prayer will flow into her presentation. Both morning prayer and Sally Goodall’s presentation will take place in the worship space.
Why Centering Prayer? God asks us to “pray without ceasing” as part of our relationship with Him. There are many types of prayer and many methods Christians use to deepen this relationship. According to the Contemplative Outreach website,
“Centering Prayer is not meant to replace other kinds of prayer. Rather, it adds depth of meaning to all prayer and facilitates the movement from more active modes of prayer–verbal, mental or affective prayer–into a receptive prayer of resting in God. Centering Prayer emphasizes prayer as a personal relationship with God and as a movement beyond conversation with Christ to communion with Christ.”
Author Amos Smith writes, “Another way to think about Centering Prayer is training the mind to become free from distractions so it can “rest in God.”
Our experience with Sally Goodall will be meaningful to those learning about Centering Prayer for the first time as well as those who have incorporated it into their lives as a spiritual discipline for a long time. Do you know who among your New Life friends has experience with Centering Prayer? Ask around!!
This day has been organized by your Spirituality Team with special advance thanks to the July 9 Coffee Hour team! Please contact Julie Martin or sign up on the list at church to let us know what you will bring to the potluck after the presentation! The team will provide hot dogs, buns, and ice cream for sundaes!
Take advantage of this opportunity to learn another spiritual discipline together as a parish. This is a great opportunity for you to invite friends or family members who might be interested in this ancient and powerful method of growing closer to God… and in a good potluck lunch, too!
