| Help for the Earthquake Victims in Haiti |

On January 12, the island nation of Haiti was rocked by the strongest earthquake it had experienced in 200 years. The result was total devastation. Many of us are asking how we can help. We have a relationship with two organizations that will accept your donations and help you to make a difference immediately: Food for the Poor Father Jay Pierce, who just visited us says: When I visited your congregation I spoke of the tragedy of Haiti: unemployment, illiteracy, malnutrition, lack of medical care, inadequate housing, and hopelessness that pervaded every portion of life. But today . . . today we watch the news as pictures tell us of devastation beyond our imagination to the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere. The estimates of the dead and missing continue to rise from 100,000 to 150,000 . . .All hospitals in Haiti have been destroyed . . .There are no fire or emergency facilities . . .Injured and dead people lie in the street . . .People wonder aimlessly about in shock . . .There is no electricity . . . Food For The Poor has delivered $ millions upon $ millions to the people of Haiti in food, medical care, education support and housing through our warehouse in Port-au-Prince. It has been damaged, but we will begin operations as soon as possible. In this crisis I ask you to respond generously to the needs of your brothers and sisters in Christ. And, remember, 95% of every gift you provide goes directly into the life of the people you respond to. At least three million people are estimated to have been affected by the earthquake. Innumerable homes and major structures were destroyed. The Rev. Kesner Ajax, Executive Director of the Bishop Tharp Institute, said: “There is no Cathedral. The entire Holy Trinity complex is gone. The convent for the Sisters of St. Margaret is gone. The Bishop’s house is gone. College St. Pierre is gone.” Episcopal Relief & Development has disbursed emergency funding to the Diocese of Haiti to help meet critical needs such as food, water and shelter for those affected. As communication improves and recovery plans develop, we will continue to provide updates. We are standing ready to support the country’s ongoing recovery and rebuilding efforts in the days to come.
